The Best Viral Videos Captured by Smart Doorbells

Knock knock, who’s there? Hopefully no one.

Gone are the days when a visitor at your door was a welcome thing. Apps now let us limit our human interaction; you can call for a taxi, order food, and even repay friends without ever looking up from your phone.

Video doorbells like Ring and the Nest Hello, meanwhile, mean we can also decide whether to pretend we’re not home or let someone in with just a glance at an app.

Sometimes, though, a video doorbell is as much an entertainment device as a streaming stick. Comedy and pathos can play out on a front porch with an unintended audience of thousands if the video is shared on social media. The found-footage style has an almost Dogme 95 quality about it.

The short films and stills below are a window on what could be at the door.

  • Doggy Door

This pup let itself out, only to quickly realize what a bad decision that was. Getting back inside meant owning up to his mistakes, so he went around to the front door and rang the Ring. Even better: the Ring is set to make a knocking sound. Would definitely invite inside.
  • Caped Invader

Artificial intelligence might kill us all but it has to find us first. This Nest doorbell identified Batman as the face at the door instead of the guy wearing the Batman t-shirt and locked them both out.
  • You Better Twerk

Singer K. Michelle had understandably had enough of the same person ringing her doorbell day after day. It was perhaps her visitor’s casual twerking that finally pushed her over the edge, but it’s probably safe to say that her Ring will be quiet for a while. (Warning: NSFW language)
  • Who Watches the Watchmen

Imagine you ring your doorbell and someone else answers. This spooky occurrence with a Ring doorbell has an explanation but still should send chills down the spine of anyone looking to buy a video doorbell. A family purchased a returned Ring at Home Depot and it was still apparently linked to someone else’s account so when they got locked out and rang the bell, its original owner answered.
  • Home Alone

Bored while his mom talks to a neighbor, all this kid wants to do is go home and watch the “kid channel.” While he’s unable to navigate the remote control, he is able to get some IT assistance by reaching his dad at work via the Ring doorbell app.
  • The Great Escape

In every band of criminals there is a ringleader and often it is the one you would least suspect. That’s how it is with this pack of canines who were getting out of their fenced-in front yard every day. Their human set up a Ring doorbell and discovered the littlest one was opening the gate so that he and his friends could flee.
